KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to modernize public transport by embracing electric mobility. In the upcoming 2025–26 budget, provincial authorities will allocate funds for electric taxis and scooters, along with plans to expand the existing bus fleet, as part of their push for cleaner and greener travel.

Karachi, home to 20 million residents and long plagued by urban transport challenges, lies at the center of this initiative. To address these issues, the Sindh government is intensifying its focus on sustainable mobility by planning to introduce new buses, double-deckers, and electric vehicle-based solutions.

Sindh Government Lays Foundation for Green Transport Shift:

Transport and Mass Transit Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon chaired a high-level meeting where officials finalized the plan. Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, SMTA MD Kamal Dayo, and TransKarachi CEO Fuad Ghaffar Soomro also attended the session.

Officials conducted a detailed review of the 2024–25 fiscal year projects and discussed upcoming initiatives, including:

  • Scaling the People’s Bus Service
  • Expanding EV scooter fleets
  • Establishing charging stations across Sindh
  • Progress on Key BRT Projects

Progress on Key BRT Projects:

During the briefing, officials updated Sharjeel Memon on major developments, including:

  • Completion of the Jam Sadiq Bridge, a critical part of the Yellow Line BRT, is now poised for inauguration
  • Renewed push to accelerate work on the Red Line BRT

Memon reaffirmed the government’s commitment:

“The Sindh government is constantly striving for eco-friendly and affordable travel facilities for the people.”

Sharjeel Memon took a significant step toward realizing this vision during his recent visit to Chery Holdings Group (CHG) headquarters in Wuhu, China. During the discussions, CHG officials expressed their interest in setting up EV charging stations across Sindh.

According to the plan, authorities will install charging stations every 50 kilometers in all districts.

“The establishment of EV charging stations at regular intervals would benefit owners of electric motorcycles, cars and trucks,” the minister said.

The government has started setting up an assembly plant for EV mini-trucks in Karachi as part of its broader strategy to drive innovation in the transport sector and generate local employment opportunities.

“We want every citizen across Sindh, including Karachi, to avail modern travel facilities,” Memon added.

“The projects are aimed at regulating traffic and developing the transport system on modern lines.”
