WhatsApp has reportedly announced that it is introducing new security features and updates to help users keep their accounts secure including enhanced account security and advanced login protection for their accounts.
The recent update comes as WhatsApp and other messaging applications such as Signal and Telegram streamline account security, making it accessible for everyday users especially as phishing and hacking attempts have become more advanced over the years.
WhatsApp’s two-step verification has previously used a six-digit PIN to provide extra security for accounts, even if someone manages to obtain a user’s one-time passcode.
Users have not had the option to create a longer, more complex password using letters, numbers and special characters, which could make their accounts harder to access.
Passkeys play a pivotal role in removing the need to rely on username and password combinations which are easily compromised by phishing attacks. Passkeys login makes it harder to remotely access your accounts.
Android users will also now receive more information when they get calls from people who are not in their contacts, including whether the number is from another country.
Users can now use phishing-resistant passkeys on both iOS and Android. The new security features also include the option to add full passwords for two-step verification and provide more details about unknown calls on Android.
