The Met Gala 2026 will be held on the first Monday of May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
This year’s theme is “Costume Art,” and guests must follow a strict dress code of “Fashion is Art.” The event will also celebrate the opening of the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, which will be a permanent space dedicated to fashion.
Theme of Met Gala 2026
The Met Gala 2026 theme has been announced as “Costume Art,” revealed by Vogue on November 17. The theme is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring 2026 exhibition and marks the opening of the Costume Institute’s first permanent galleries at the museum.
The new Condé M. Nast Galleries will cover nearly 12,000 square feet and will be located next to The Met’s Great Hall. Curator Andrew Bolton described this as a major moment for the Costume Institute, saying it will not only transform the department but also have a wider impact on how fashion is viewed, especially with a leading art museum giving fashion such an important place.
The exhibition will focus on the importance of clothing in art by combining paintings, sculptures, and other works from 5,000 years of history with both historical and modern fashion pieces from the Costume Institute.
