YouTube introduces long-requested thumbnail editing tool for shorts

SAN BRUNO: YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows eligible creators to upload and edit custom thumbnails for Shorts, fulfilling a long-standing request from content creators.

The new tool is currently available only to creators enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program, meaning those who monetize their videos. Eligible users can upload custom thumbnail images for their Shorts to better attract viewers.

YouTube said creators will also be able to change thumbnails for previously published Shorts through YouTube Studio on desktop or laptop computers.

The feature builds on thumbnail customization tools that have long been available for standard-length videos.

On mobile devices, creators will continue to be able to select any frame from a video as its thumbnail. On desktop, YouTube will also suggest three thumbnail frames, with recommendations based on the video’s content and style.

The company said it plans to expand the feature to more users in the near future, making thumbnail customization available beyond members of the YouTube Partner Program.

Earlier, YouTube has announced stricter enforcement of its policies on artificial intelligence (AI)-generated videos to reduce the spread of low-quality, repetitive and potentially harmful content on the platform.

The company said the updated guidelines are intended to clarify its existing rules as more creators use AI tools to produce videos.

According to YouTube, the revised policy does not introduce new rules but provides clearer guidance on the types of AI-generated content that could face restrictions.

The platform said it will focus on videos that rely heavily on repetitive AI-generated material or contain content considered misleading, manipulative or harmful to viewers.
