Independent animator Max Gilardi, better known online as hotdiggedydemon, revealed plans to travel to Switzerland to pursue physician-assisted euthanasia following years of serious health and financial difficulties.
Gilardi discussed his plans during a livestream on August 1, explaining that several health problems had significantly affected his quality of life.
He has previously said he was diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2024 and has also experienced chronic uncontrollable drooling and persistent tinnitus.
Gilardi became known during the early internet animation era through work on Newgrounds and YouTube.
His PONY.MOV series, which parodied My Little Pony Friendship is Magic with dark comedy and surreal humour, developed a substantial cult following. He was also known for Brain Dump, which combined animation, personal experiences and commentary.
His announcement prompted an emotional response from fans across social media and online animation communities.
According to reports however, Gilardi has since decided to reconsider his decision, explaining that he “will reassess” as he was “not thinking clearly”.
The report states that Switzerland permits assisted dying under specific legal and medical circumstances, with individual cases subject to assessment. Gilardi has not publicly provided further details about his plans or the progress of any application.
His announcement renewed discussion about chronic illness, creator burnout, financial insecurity and end-of-life decisions.
