Where is Savannah Guthrie? ‘Today’ host leaves mid-show as insider explains absence

Guthrie had recently returned to ‘Today’ after a two-month absence following her mother Nancy’s disappearance

Savannah Guthrie’s sudden absence during a live broadcast of Today on April 15, 2026, has prompted questions from viewers, with insiders offering possible explanations for her mid-show exit.

The presenter stepped away shortly after introducing actor Anne Hathaway. When the programme returned from a commercial break, co-host Hoda Kotb had taken over the interview segment, speaking with Hathaway about her upcoming projects, Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2.

Neither NBC nor the Today programme issued an immediate explanation, leading to speculation among viewers. Some linked the departure to ongoing concerns surrounding Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, whose reported kidnapping has been under investigation.

An insider previously told the Daily Mail that NBC had implemented a protocol to alert Guthrie of any developments in the case. According to the source, she would be informed she was “needed off set” if urgent news emerged. “We would pull her immediately, mid-segment if we had to,” the source said, adding that she would then be briefed privately while coverage continued on air.

However, another source suggested the situation may not have been unusual. They explained that it is common practice for one presenter to introduce a segment before another host conducts the interview, indicating the changeover could have been routine.

Guthrie had only recently returned to Today on April 6 after a two-month absence linked to her family situation. The investigation into her mother’s disappearance remains ongoing.

While no official reason has been confirmed, the incident highlights both the unpredictability of live television and the personal challenges facing high-profile broadcasters.
