Tupac trial update: Witness takes wild turn as he appears to protect rapper’s alleged killer
It is the second day in the trial of Tupac Shakur’s murder, but it reportedly turned upside down when a key witness appears to protect the rapper’s alleged killer in his testimony.
His name is James ‘Mob James’ McDonald.
He was an ex-associate of Suge Knight, the former Death Row Records executive, who was with Shakur in the car when he was killed.
McDonald was also working on a security team at Club 662 — the destination Knight and Shakur were en route to — on the fateful night in 1996 in Los Angeles.
That’s why he was put on a stand by prosecutors to reveal what he knew about the case and alleged involvement of primary accused Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis.
The accused is facing the court for claims of playing a key role in the killing of the rap legend.
Though Davis has pleaded not guilty, prosecutors argue that he did not himself pull the trigger — but he was part of the group who is accused of shooting Shakur.
However, the testimony that may have linked it all turned awry when McDonald refused to say anything against the accused.
“You’re asking me something that wouldn’t be good for him,” the witness said, pointing towards Davis.
Then, McDonald delivered a shocker, “I don’t want to send him to prison, even though we don’t like each other.”
Not stopping there, the witness then issued a stark warning to Davis’ defense team.
“You ask me something I don’t wanna talk about, you’re gonna have a problem. Treat me as a hostile witness.”
Still, the defense cross-examination continued, to which irked McDonald blasted, “You’re not gonna talk to me and tell me as a grown man what I have to do up here.”
“I’m not gonna send him to prison, you are,” he reiterated as the trial’s day two afterward ended.
Though the court proceedings will take four to six weeks to conclude, if Davis is convicted, he would face lifetime imprisonment.
