WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Monday demanded that Iran pay compensation for deaths and damages linked to past conflicts, protests and attacks, as Tehran and Washington struggled to restart negotiations over a possible peace agreement and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s demand came after Iran presented conditions for a peace deal, including compensation claims and an end to US sanctions. Tehran’s demands were mostly based on a preliminary agreement reached in June, but the deal later collapsed.
Trump’s latest proposal introduced a new condition that had not been part of earlier discussions. He said Iran should provide financial payments for losses caused over the past five decades, including deaths involving civilians and US military personnel in the region.
“We’re going to ask for money for the damage they’ve done over a 50 year period,” Trump said at the White House.
He added that Iran should be responsible for paying damages if losses were linked to its actions. The comments increased uncertainty over efforts to ease tensions and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a major global oil shipping route.
The US Secretary of the Treasury has boasted of “suffocating” Iran through economic sanctions.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei also criticized Washington’s sanctions policy, saying the US relies too heavily on economic pressure instead of diplomacy.
In a post on X, Baqaei called the sanctions approach an “addiction” and said Iran would not be forced to surrender through pressure. He warned that continued sanctions could make diplomatic solutions more difficult.
Further more, oil prices rose 5% ,as investors became less confident that a deal to reopen the strategic waterway would be reached soon.
Meanwhile, Yemen’s military reported that Houthi forces launched missiles and drones toward the Red Sea port city of Mocha and nearby port facilities.

According to Yemen’s government backed military, the attack killed seven people, including four military personnel and three civilians, while around 30 others were injured. Military officials said air defenses intercepted 11 drones during the attack.
The Houthis said their strikes targeted Saudi military positions and weapons storage sites in the area. The attack followed another reported assault on the city and its commercial port less than a day earlier.
The report said Israeli forces launched heavy shelling in the area, while military vehicles and equipment moved through nearby villages. It also reported that Israeli earthmoving equipment destroyed homes in Zawtar al-Charqiyeh and Zawtar al-Gharbiyeh. The incidents were described as another violation of the US backed ceasefire agreement reached on June 26.
