Trump rules out rush on Iran, threatens Oman over Hormuz

Trump again called on Iran to surrender and raise a white flag as a sign of peace.

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has warned that Oman could face heavy bombing if it obstructs US efforts concerning Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, as a 60-day ceasefire understanding between the United States and Iran expires amid continuing tensions in the Middle East.

In an interview with Fox News journalist Trey Yingst, Trump said the United States could launch a major bombing campaign against Oman if the Gulf state stood in the way of Washington’s efforts over the strategic waterway.

Trump’s warning is particularly notable because Oman has traditionally played an important diplomatic and mediating role between the United States and Iran and has served as a channel for communication between the two countries.

Trump again called on Iran to surrender and raise a white flag as a sign of peace. He described Iran’s leaders as “good poker players” but said the country was facing serious difficulties.

As the 60-day period under the US-Iran ceasefire understanding came to an end, Trump said there was no fixed timetable for dealing with Iran and that he was not in a hurry. He said Washington’s main priority remained preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.

Trump also rejected reports that the United States had significantly depleted its stockpiles of advanced weapons, including Patriot missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles, during the conflict.

He downplayed the amount of US weaponry used in the fighting, saying that America had used only a very small portion of its available arsenal.
