US President Donald Trump has rejected concerns that the war with Iran has depleted American munitions, insisting the country has more weapons than it could need.
Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly before his scheduled address to the United Nations: “The cowards and traitors would love to say the United States is low on munitions.”
“It’s not true. We have more munitions than we could ever possibly think of using, and are building them up now at levels we have never seen before.”
The comments follow reports that shortages of key weapons, including missile interceptors, are affecting US decision-making during the war.
The Guardian reported that the US Defense Department’s inspector general recently acknowledged supply pressures, saying missile use in Iran had “resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply.”
The US and Iran have been at war since February, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran that killed the country’s supreme leader.
Iran has since blockaded the Strait of Hormuz and launched drones and missiles at US bases and ships in the region.
Washington has responded with further strikes and economic sanctions as the Trump administration seeks to pressure Tehran into negotiations.
