Tom Holland is preparing to take on one of the most demanding roles of his career, that he’s already back in the dance studio ahead of playing legendary actor and dancer “Fred Astaire” in an upcoming biopic.
Holland said he feels like he’s entering a new phase in his career, one where he can no longer coast on youthful roles the way he once did. He explained that he’s drawn to challenging projects, and that the Fred Astaire biopic is next on his agenda once his current promotional tour wraps up at which point he plans to return fully to dance training.
Holland admitted the role brings a complicated mix of emotions, describing his early rehearsals as leaving him with both excitement and, in his words, “absolute dread.” He said he recognizes how much work lies ahead if he hopes to do justice to Astaire’s legacy on screen.
Holland said he wants to perform all of the film’s dance sequences himself, without relying on stunt doubles. He explained his goal is to capture the dance numbers in a single continuous shot, similar to how Astaire himself would have filmed them, staying true to the classic Hollywood approach the dancer was known for.
The Fred Astaire biopic was first announced back in 2021, though details on its production timeline have remained limited since then. Holland’s comments suggest the project is now moving closer to active production with dance preparation already underway.
