Tom Cruise’s ‘Digger’ opens with mixed reviews as Rotten Tomatoes score reaches 52%

Tom Cruise’s Digger has received mixed reviews from critics ahead of its cinema release, with the film recording a 52% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 79 reviews.
The Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed climate change satire is scheduled to open in cinemas on Friday, October 2.
Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, an oil billionaire who attempts to convince the world he can prevent a disaster linked to his own actions. Riz Ahmed also stars.
Critics have differed sharply over the film, although several reviews have highlighted Cruise’s performance.
Positive responses have described the film as ambitious and unusual, while negative reviews have criticised its length, satire and tone.
The New York Post wrote, “You can tell that [Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu] think their new film is urgent. And in a way, it is. Audiences will urgently want to leave after the first five minutes.”
The Guardian called it “an exasperatingly shallow, laborious, self-congratulatory satire”, while TheWrap compared the film to “the week’s worst ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketch”.
Other critics offered a more favourable assessment. The London Evening Standard described the film as “Audacious, risky, terrific fun”, while USA Today praised Cruise for pushing his performance in a new direction.
The BBC also highlighted Cruise’s performance, writing, “I couldn’t help grinning at the gargantuan scale of his performance”.
The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes will become available when Digger opens on Friday.
Warner Bros. has also released a new promotional spot encouraging audiences to decide for themselves.
