Taylor Swift premiered her “Patient Zero” music video at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, giving fans plenty of details to examine for references to her past work and possible clues about what could come next.
The video stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell alongside Swift, who narrates the couple’s story and its connection to her own experiences.
Swift directed the video, while Oscar-winning cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki worked on the production.
The video opens with Johnson visiting a grave before Swift appears alongside her.
Throughout the story, Swift repeatedly appears in Johnson’s life with her husband, played by Farrell. The two women are presented as mirrors of each other, with similar clothing and Johnson applying red lipstick associated with Swift.
The ending reveals that Farrell’s character was married to Swift, an heiress, and poisoned her for her money.
He is apparently repeating the same plan with Johnson’s character, while Swift appears as a ghost attempting to warn her. Johnson eventually places a rose at Swift’s grave, which reads, “Beloved wife and daughter, gone too soon.”
Several scenes contain references to Swift’s previous work.
The cemetery has been compared with the setting of “Look What You Made Me Do”, which premiered at the VMAs in 2017.
The video also features a dinner-table argument resembling the “Tolerate It” staging from Swift’s Eras Tour.
Celebrity cameos include Cara Delevingne and Los Angeles Rams player Matthew Stafford.
Fans have also interpreted clues including “saccharide” and “North or South” as possible references to Farrell and Johnson.
The video’s dark visual style has also led fans to compare it with Swift’s Tortured Poets era rather than the brighter aesthetic associated with The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore.
The music video became available immediately after the premiere on subscription streaming services like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Spotify and will be released on YouTube on September 29.
