Sydney’s new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport (WSI) has officially opened its doors to commercial passenger flights.

The historic launch kicked off with its inaugural passenger service—Jetstar flight JQ362, an Airbus A320 bound for the Gold Coast—successfully lifting off at 11:22 AM local time, witnessed by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and hundreds of guests.

What’s new?

Unlike Sydney’s primary Kingsford Smith Airport, which is closer to the CBD and constrained by a strict 11 PM to 6 AM curfew, Western Sydney International operates 24 hours a day with no curfew, providing crucial scheduling flexibility for airlines and red-eye flights.

While cargo operations commenced earlier in July, the multi-billion dollar facility in Luddenham, about 45 km west of the Sydney CBD, is now fully welcoming travelers, with international passenger services rolling out immediately after launch (including arrivals like Air New Zealand from Auckland).

Stage 1 of the airport is designed to handle roughly 10 million passenger movements a year, with master-plan capacity to scale up significantly over the coming decades.

The launch marks the opening of Australia’s first major new airport in more than 50 years.

‘History made’

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also express his feeling at Sydney’s new Western Sydney International Airport’s launch in a post on ‘X’.
