Study highlights cancer prevention benefits of brief daily exercise

The study tracked more than 22,000 adults who did not regularly exercise over a period of nearly seven years.

SYDNEY: Engaging in just a few minutes of vigorous physical activity each day may significantly reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer, according to new research conducted by the University of Sydney in Australia.

The study tracked more than 22,000 adults who did not regularly exercise over a period of nearly seven years. Researchers found that incorporating just four to five minutes of relatively intense physical activity into daily routines was associated with an estimated 18% reduction in overall cancer risk and up to a 32% lower risk of physical activity-related cancers.

Researchers said people do not need to join a gym to benefit. Everyday activities such as carrying heavy shopping bags, brisk walking, climbing stairs, or playing active games with children can provide enough intensity to improve health.

The study also found that short bursts of physical activity enhanced cardiorespiratory fitness the efficiency of the heart and lungs which researchers believe may be a key biological factor behind the reduced cancer risk.

Experts added that maintaining an active lifestyle can also improve insulin sensitivity and reduce chronic inflammation, two factors that have been linked to a lower risk of cancer.
