Spotify logo update for 20th anniversary triggers online debate

Spotify has marked its 20th anniversary with a bold visual refresh, introducing a shimmering green disco ball-style app icon that has sparked widespread debate and mixed reactions among users across social media.

The update is part of the company’s global celebration campaign “Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s)”, aimed at highlighting two decades of the platform’s evolution in the music streaming industry. While the signature three soundwave lines remain intact, the new design gives the logo a textured, reflective appearance resembling a disco ball.

The change has quickly gained attention after appearing on users’ mobile apps, although Spotify has clarified that the redesign is part of a limited-time anniversary theme rather than a permanent branding shift.

The redesign has divided users online, with many taking to X (formerly Twitter) to express confusion and criticism. Some users said the new icon feels less clear on mobile screens, while others argued that the previous minimalist design was more visually appealing.

Spotify responded lightly to the discussion through its official account, calling the icon “lovely,” without confirming whether it will remain after the anniversary campaign.

As part of the celebrations, Spotify has also introduced a mobile-only feature that allows users to revisit their listening history, including first-streamed songs, most-played tracks, and top artists. Users can also generate a personalized playlist of their top 120 songs, along with shareable data cards similar to Spotify Wrapped.

The platform further revealed its all-time streaming records, with Taylor Swift named the most-streamed artist globally.

Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti topped the album category, while The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” remains the most-streamed song of all time. The Joe Rogan Experience leads podcast rankings, and Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses topped audiobook streams.

Spotify, founded in Sweden in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, launched in the United States in 2011 and has since grown into one of the world’s leading audio streaming platforms.
