‘South Park’ changes name to ‘South America’ in response to Trump renaming efforts
The name change is the creators’ response to the US President’s efforts to rename geographical landmarks and places
South Park has announced a tongue-in-cheek name change to “South America” for its 29th season, responding to US President Donald Trump’s efforts to rename geographical landmarks and places.
Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker said the change was “Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google”. They added: “We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount – a Skydance Capitulation.”
The satirical Comedy Central series’ announcement follows Trump’s recent suggestion that New Mexico should be renamed “New America”.
The president shared an AI-generated video depicting the proposed change, although the US federal government has no authority to rename a state.
The move also follows earlier attempts by the Trump administration to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” and relabel Lake Ontario as “Lake America”.
South Park, which first aired in 1997, has frequently mocked Trump and his administration. Its creators have faced criticism from Trump and Maga figures over several storylines and depictions involving the president and his political allies.
The show’s latest name change continues its long-running use of political satire to comment on events in Washington.
Its reference to Apple and Google also reflects criticism surrounding companies that have adopted or acknowledged Trump’s preferred geographical terminology.
The announcement comes amid wider political controversy surrounding Trump’s proposed renaming efforts, including the response to his New Mexico suggestion from Democrats, who described it as a distraction from other issues.
