The palace said the couple joined athletes and spectators at the event to celebrate the championships.
LONDON: King Charles’ office has shared an update on Prince Edward and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, following an announcement about their son James, Earl of Wessex, beginning a new chapter in his life.
On Aug. 14, the royal family’s official Instagram account shared a series of photographs showing the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh attending the European Athletics Championships Birmingham 2026.
The palace said the couple joined athletes and spectators at the event to celebrate the championships being held in the United Kingdom for the first time.
The appearance came after royal commentator Rebecca English reported that the palace had shared details about James, Earl of Wessex’s plans following his academic achievements.
English said James had secured the grades he needed and would attend the Royal Agricultural University, where he will study Rural Land & Property Management.
According to the royal commentator, James will begin university immediately rather than taking a gap year.

Earlier, Prince George is set to begin secondary school at Eton College next month, and the school has installed new privacy signs ahead of his arrival.
Like his father, Prince William, did years ago, the 13-year-old prince will live at the all-boys boarding school. He will return to his family’s nearby home on some weekends and during school breaks.
New “no photography” signs have appeared around the campus ahead of George’s arrival, reinforcing privacy rules already in place for students and visitors.
