Rare solar storm could bring Northern Lights to 18 U.S. states tonight

Skywatchers across the United States are in for a rare celestial display tonight as the aurora borealis may be visible across as many as 18 states, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The stunning natural phenomenon could continue throughout the week as solar activity intensifies.

Experts at NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center say shifting solar wind patterns are pushing auroral activity farther south than usual, increasing the chances of visibility in regions that rarely witness the northern lights.

The aurora borealis occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in Earth’s atmosphere. This interaction excites oxygen and nitrogen molecules, producing glowing waves of green, purple, and red light across the night sky.

NOAA forecasts suggest that the best viewing chances will be during late-night hours, particularly between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time, when geomagnetic activity is typically at its peak. Conditions may remain favorable for multiple nights as solar winds continue to fluctuate.

Under the latest outlook, visibility may extend across northern and central U.S. states, including Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and several others. However, the brightest displays are expected in the northernmost regions.

Officials recommend heading to dark, open areas away from city lights for the best viewing experience, with a clear view toward the northern horizon. Even if the aurora appears faint to the naked eye, modern smartphone cameras with night mode can often capture more vivid colors.

The event is being described by forecasters as a rare opportunity for widespread aurora visibility, driven by temporary changes in solar wind conditions that enhance geomagnetic activity on Earth.

Astronomy enthusiasts are being encouraged to monitor real-time space weather updates for the best chance to witness the phenomenon as it unfolds throughout the week.
