PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a high alert for upper districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa amid the looming threat of glacier lake outburst floods and flash flooding.
According to the advisory, sudden rise in temperatures along with forecasted rainfall has increased the risk of glacial lake outbursts and associated flash floods in mountainous regions.
The PDMA stated that rainfall and thunderstorms are expected on May 3, while a new wave of western disturbances is likely to enter the region.
Under this weather system, heavy rain is expected in areas including Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Kohistan.
Authorities warned that the situation could trigger sudden flood conditions, posing serious threats to low-lying settlements. Strong water currents in rivers and streams may also create risks for vehicles and infrastructure.
The PDMA has directed district administrations to take emergency preparedness measures, enhance monitoring in vulnerable areas, and ensure availability of rescue teams and necessary machinery.
It further emphasized the activation of early warning systems to ensure timely response in case of any emergency.
The public has been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly to high-risk and hazardous areas, and to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions.
