Pakistan’s Dar arrives in Turkey after UK visit for regional security talks

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, arrived in Istanbul on Sunday for official engagements after concluding a visit to the United Kingdom, the Foreign Office said.

Ishaq Dar was received at the airport by Turkish Deputy Chief of Staff for Administration Brig. Gen. Senol Varol, Pakistan’s Ambassador to Turkiye Dr. Yousaf Junaid, Turkish Foreign Ministry Ambassador Cihad Erginay and other senior Turkish officials, according to the Foreign Office.

In an earlier statement, the Foreign Office said Dar had concluded “a successful official visit to the UK,” during which he met with British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, Minister of State for Pakistan Stephen Doughty, National Security Adviser Jonathan Powell, International Maritime Organisation Secretary General Arsenio Dominguez and Commonwealth Secretary General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

Dar also spoke with British parliamentarians of Pakistani origin and members of the Pakistani diaspora in the UK during the trip.

The Foreign Office did not provide specific details of Dar’s engagements in Turkiye. However, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan invited Dar earlier this month to the Regional-4 meeting, which includes Saudi Arabia and Egypt along with Turkiye and Pakistan. Dar accepted the invitation and confirmed his participation in the meeting, which was scheduled for August, the Foreign Office said.

The R-4 group, focused on regional security, emerged in March amid efforts for mediation between the U.S. and Iran. The Istanbul meeting is planned as negotiations remain stalled and the nearly six-month-old war continues with little sign of resolution.

The last R-4 meeting was held in June in Cairo, where the countries welcomed the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. and Iran. The first meeting took place in Riyadh on the sidelines of a consultative ministerial meeting, and the second was held in Islamabad; both occurred in March.
