Pakistan urges support for Islamabad MoU, as US-Iran tensions continue

Pakistan also reaffirmed its support for a peaceful solution to the Iran nuclear issue.

Pakistan has called on all parties to honor the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), warning that any disruption to the diplomatic process could make it harder to resolve the Iran nuclear issue and other regional disputes.

Speaking at a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) briefing on the implementation of Resolution 2231, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said the recent rise in tensions was not in the interest of any country.

His remarks came as diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran faced new challenges following renewed military tensions and disagreements over last month’s ceasefire.

US President Donald Trump said Washington had agreed to continue talks with Iran. However, he also stated that the ceasefire reached last month had ended.

At the UN meeting, Pakistan urged all sides to show restraint and avoid actions that could increase regional instability.

Ahmad said violence and conflict must end to protect peace, security and economic stability in the region. He stressed that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only effective way to resolve disputes.

Pakistan also reaffirmed its support for a peaceful solution to the Iran nuclear issue through negotiations and continued diplomatic engagement.

Ahmad described the Islamabad MoU, signed last month, as a practical framework for resolving differences through dialogue. He warned that any interruption to the agreement could delay progress and make future negotiations more difficult.

The appeal comes after a week of heightened tensions that included attacks on commercial ships, US strikes on Iranian targets and Iranian attacks on US military sites in the Gulf.
