Former US President Barack Obama has mocked Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada, criticising tariffs that he says are increasing prices for American consumers.

According to CTV News, Obama made the remarks during a Democratic campaign rally in Detroit on Saturday, ahead of November’s US midterm elections.

Obama sarcastically described Canada as a “well-known evil empire,” questioning why Trump was targeting one of America’s closest allies.

“These are the people who gave us Martin Short … and maple syrup,” Obama said, praising Canadians for their friendliness.

The former president also criticised Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods, arguing that they were making everyday products more expensive.

“He was warned. This will drive prices up. This does not lower prices,” Obama said.

Obama highlighted the impact on Michigan’s automotive industry, where manufacturers rely on parts moving between Canada and the United States.

He explained that tariffs increase production costs because vehicle components often cross the border several times before assembly.

Obama also suggested Trump’s repeated threats to make Canada the 51st US state had damaged relations between the neighbouring countries.

The ongoing trade dispute has affected Canadian industries including steel, aluminium, lumber and automotive manufacturing.

Canada has responded with counter-tariffs, adding pressure on businesses and consumers.
