New rules introduced for all solar system users

These changes show major shift in government’s approach to regulating solar energy systems in Pakistan.

Ministry of Energy (Power Division) Pakistan has introduced new changes to solar system regulations, making it compulsory for all consumers to get a license from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority to generate electricity.

Under the updated policy, consumers will have to pay a licensing fee based on the size of their solar system. As part of the process, applicants will also need to submit a pay order in NEPRA’s name.

Earlier, people installing solar systems of up to 25 kilowatts could get licenses free of cost, but this facility has now been removed under the new rules.

According to sources, consumers will now be required to pay an extra fee of Rs. 1,000 per kilowatt.

The new amendments also state that consumers will receive connections under a net billing system.

These changes show a major shift in the government’s approach to regulating solar energy systems in Pakistan.
