Modern Warfare 4 takes new direction after MW2 criticism

Infinity Ward has acknowledged that player movement in 2022’s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 did not meet expectations.

The game developer says it has listened to community feedback and is making changes in the upcoming Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4. The comments were made in the latest episode of From the Ward, a behind the scenes YouTube series about the development of the new game.

Infinity Ward co studio head Mark Grigsby admitted that some movement options were removed in Modern Warfare 2, which left many players unhappy.

According to Grigsby, fans felt the game lacked freedom and that movement did not feel smooth or enjoyable. He said the team recognized those concerns and decided to make adjustments for the next title.

Co-studio head Jack O’Hara revealed some of the new movement features coming to Modern Warfare 4. Players will be able to mantle while sliding and slide into a lying position. The developers have also hinted at improvements to climbing, hanging, and jumping mechanics.

The changes are aimed at making movement feel more fluid while still keeping the realistic style that the Modern Warfare series is known for. Many players have compared the series to recent Black Ops titles, which feature the faster-paced Omni-movement system.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4, is scheduled to launch on October 23 for Nintendo Switch 2, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. A free open beta will be available before release, giving players a chance to test the new movement system before deciding to purchase the game.
