Kylian Mbappe has become the first player to win the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot twice after finishing as the tournament’s top scorer at the 2026 World Cup.
France forward Kylian Mbappe won the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot after scoring 10 goals in eight matches, finishing ahead of Lionel Messi in a closely contested race for the award.
Mbappe also won the Golden Boot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with eight goals, becoming the first player to claim the award at consecutive World Cups.
The 27-year-old also became the first player since West Germany’s Gerd Müller in 1970 to score 10 goals in a single World Cup tournament.
Only France’s Just Fontaine, who scored 13 goals in 1958, and Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis, who scored 11 goals in 1954, have scored more goals in a single World Cup tournament than Mbappe.
With 22 World Cup goals, Mbappe is now the leading scorer in the history of the men’s tournament, one goal ahead of Messi.
He moved ahead of the Argentine after scoring twice in France’s 6-4 loss to England in Saturday’s third-place playoff, although the defeat left France in fourth place.
Mbappe also scored two goals each against Senegal and Iraq in the group stage before finding the net against Sweden in the round of 32.
He then scored against Paraguay in the round of 16, including the match-winning penalty in the 70th minute, before adding another goal against Morocco in the quarterfinals.
Messi had the chance to overtake Mbappe with a hat trick in Sunday’s World Cup final, but the 39-year-old failed to score as Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in New Jersey.
Messi finished the tournament with eight goals in eight matches.
England’s Jude Bellingham and Norway’s Erling Haaland scored seven goals each, while France’s Ousmane Dembele and England captain Harry Kane finished with six goals each.
