Actress Mary Rivera, known for playing Ned Leeds’ Filipino grandmother in Spider-Man: No Way Home, has died aged 82 after suffering a stroke in April.
A family member told TMZ that Rivera was placed in a coma and that her family decided to remove her from life support after doctors warned that her prognosis would not be favourable even if she regained consciousness.
She died in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was later cremated.
Rivera appeared in the 2021 Marvel film alongside Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon and Andrew Garfield.
Her character, Ned’s lola, spoke Tagalog in one memorable scene, asking Garfield’s Peter Parker to remove cobwebs from the ceiling.
Ned translates her request, saying, “My lola [grandmother in Tagalog] is asking if you could just get the cobweb there, since you’re like, up there?”
According to her family member, Rivera was “proud” of her appearance in the film. Spider-Man: No Way Home was her only acting credit listed on IMDb.
Rivera is survived by her husband, Alejandro, her children, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, according to her obituary.
Spider-Man: No Way Home earned $1.9 billion worldwide and was the highest-grossing film of 2021.
The film’s follow-up, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, was released on Friday and reportedly earned $360 million domestically in its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut in box office history.
