Mark Rydell, Oscar-nominated director of On Golden Pond and The Rose, has passed away at the age of 97.
Amy Rydell, the daughter of the acclaimed American film director, informed The Hollywood Reporter about his passing, revealing that he died so of natural causes at a nursing facility in Woodland Hills, California.
Amy also confirmed the news of her beloved father’s demise on Instagram on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Posting a carousel of pictures, including throwback pictures of herself sunbathing with her late father and him playing piano in one slide.
She also added a moving caption under her post that read, “Hard to put into words how much I loved my Dad. He was truly one of a kind. Funniest and most talented person I’ve ever known.”
“I am so grateful to be his daughter. RIP love your fatso potato chip,” Amy concluded.
According to The New York Times, his parents named him Mortimer Rydell, but he later changed it to Mark. Before stepping into the world of entertainment, he studied at New York University, the University of Chicago, Juilliard, and later the Neighbourhood Playhouse with Sanford Meisner. During his student life, he bumped into James Dean and ended up becoming best friends.
Mark and James’ bond grew stronger each passing day as they worked together in the 1953 TV play, Glory in the Flower.
The late actor’s acting career started with a role in As the World Turns in 1956 but he left the show in 1962.
It is pertinent to mention that Mark Rydell tried his luck in directing films such as The Cowboys, Intersection, For the Boys, Cinderella Liberty, The Rose, and many others.
