Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has gained major international attention in 2026 for standing up to the US President Donald Trump and urging middle powers to group together to defend their sovereignty.
Prediction-market traders and prominent admirers have floated Carney as a contender for both the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, briefly hitting 14% on Kalshi, and Time magazine’s Person of the Year.
Carney and Trump are locked in an escalating trade war involving heavy US tariffs on Canadian goods and Canadian retaliation.
Analysts note that awards going to Carney would likely enrage Trump, who has frequently complained about never winning a Nobel Peace Prize.
Nelson Wiseman, professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, said, “Trump will be unhappy whoever gets the Nobel. If Carney got it, it would make relations with Canada rockier than they are.”
Speaking about the TIME award, Carney has also built a strong public profile. Time already named Carney one of its 100 most influential people of 2026 based on his rising popularity to confront Trump.
On Tuesday, the prediction market showed that Carney was the second choice for Time’ Person of the Year behind New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
In response to US pressure, Carney has pivoted Canada closer to international allies especially Europe, receiving standing ovations at Davos and the European Parliament, where EU chief Ursula von der Leyen proposed making Canada the bloc’s first associate member.
New York University professor Scott Galloway said Carney has it in the bag and called him “the leader that Europe’s been looking for for the last 20 years.”
“I believe, hands down, Time’s Person of the Year has already been decided and it’s going to be Mark Carney,” Galloway said.
Such predictions are just speculations for now as there is no concrete evidence that the Nobel Committee has secretly shortlisted for the prize that will be announced October 9 in Oslo, Norway. Time will announce the winner on December 10.
