Jay-Z speaks out amid fan backlash following Super Bowl LXI halftime show announcement
When asked whether he felt pressure about performing at the event, the rapper remained composed amid online backlash
Jay-Z has responded to criticism following the announcement that he will headline the 2027 Super Bowl LXI halftime show in Los Angeles, with the rapper remaining composed despite backlash from NFL fans on social media.
The music mogul, whose real name is Shawn Carter, was approached by TMZ in New York on Tuesday and asked whether he felt pressure about performing at one of the biggest events in American sport.
“I don’t have pressure,” he replied with a smile. Asked about his preparations, he added, “Same as always” before leaving in his vehicle.
The announcement interrupted Monday Night Football coverage and prompted criticism from fans who questioned the decision.
Jay-Z’s company, Roc Nation, has partnered with the NFL to help produce the Super Bowl halftime show, leading some critics to argue that his involvement in selecting performers made his own headline appearance controversial.
One social media user wrote, “So let me get this straight, the guy who hand picks the performers for the halftime show out of his own circle of fellow ‘artists’ picked himself to be the halftime show performer?” Another commented, “Bro really picked himself.”
In a statement released on Tuesday, Jay-Z reflected on his career and the upcoming performance. “From Reasonable Doubt to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” he said. “Thirty years of music, work, and culture on the world’s biggest stage. This run continues to be a dream come true.”
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell also expressed support for the decision, saying he had previously encouraged Jay-Z to perform when the time felt right.
Speculation about potential guest appearances, including Beyoncé and Rihanna, has also emerged, although no additional performers have been confirmed.
