Jared Leto’s past life and activities have come under public scrutiny after the Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women.
The allegations were made in the new BBC documentary Jared Leto: Hollywood’s Dark Secret.
Multiple fans reminisced about his “cult”, referring to an event in Croatia where fans were invited to a retreat.
Leto, dressed in white robes, hosted hundreds of “devotees” for a 3-day music festival complete with yoga and movie screenings.
His band shared on social media photos of Leto leading fans, also dressed in white, with captions “Yes, this is a cult.”
As soon as allegations of sexual misconduct surfaced online, social media users shared his photos from the gathering, expressing surprise that the fans were mostly women.
It was also claimed that a group of women even paid him $6,499. However, these claims could not be independently confirmed.
A report on his so-called cult said that it wasn’t the first time Thirty Seconds to Mars embraced the phrase — “Yes, this is a cult” — it also appeared on the band’s merchandise and in their music videos.
Multiple users wondered whether female members of his “cult” would also come forward with allegations of sexual abuse.
Some said the “cult” was started with the aim of finding prey, though there is no evidence to support this.
In the BBC documentary, which airs in the UK on Wednesday, one woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted by the 54-year-old in 2002, when she was 17 and he was in his 30s.
The woman, going by the pseudonym Isabel, claimed that Leto called her into the bathroom of a “gross motel” while he was showering.
