Iran, Oman agree on Hormuz transit route understanding despite Trump’s threats

Iran has made an announcement related to reaching an understanding over the Strait of Hormuz transit route with Oman.

Iranian Foreign Affairs spokesperson Esmail Baghaei told reporters in Tehran that “an understanding has been reached regarding the map of the transit route.”

He added, “drawing up the maritime route plan with the Sultanate of Oman has been time-consuming due to security complexities because of the actions of the US and Israel and the number of actors involved and obstruction by disruptive elements.”

According to Baghaei, the proposed mechanism would seek to protect the interests of both Iran and Oman while maintaining commercial shipping.

“This is the first time that a mechanism is being developed to simultaneously safeguard the sovereign rights of two littoral states and ensure the safe passage of all commercial shippings,” he added.

Iran is currently working to finalize a joint statement with Oman on a framework to manage shipping through the strategic waterway.

The 60-day negotiating window aimed at securing a peace deal between the United States and Iran has expired without any announcement of an extension, leaving both nations as far apart as they were when talks began.

Fully reopening the Strait remains a central demand from Washington, with US President Donald Trump renewing threats against Oman as discussions progress.

On Monday, in an interview with Fox News, President Trump threatened to bomb Oman over Hormuz.

Trey Yingst, a Fox reporter, said, “I asked the president about . . . parallel talks that are taking place between Iran and Oman about control of the Strait of Hormuz.”

He said that Trump responded, “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb the s*** out of them.”

No further details regarding the mechanism have been disclosed yet. Previously it was reported that Iran wants to exert full control over inbound traffic of ships and Oman will manage outbound traffic along with Tehran.
