House of the Dragon’ Season 3 Episode 7 recap: Penultimate episode delivers major dragon battles and dramatic betrayals

House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 7, “The Dragon in Winter”, delivers one of the season’s strongest episodes so far, combining major dragon confrontations, shifting alliances and several dramatic character moments.

The penultimate episode stands out for its intense action and stronger dialogue, although some ongoing storylines continue to weaken the overall season.

The episode’s central sequence sees Rhaena, Daemon, Rhaenyra and Addam caught in a dangerous confrontation involving Sheepstealer, Syrax, Seasmoke and Caraxes.

The encounter highlights the unpredictable nature of wild dragons and leaves Sheepstealer badly injured before Daemon allows the creature to escape.

Elsewhere, Aegon II and Tyland Lannister face Rhaenyra’s forces after fleeing Rook’s Rest.

Aegon refuses to surrender and declares himself the rightful king before the sudden appearance of Sunfyre changes the confrontation. His command, “Sunfyre,” followed by “Dracarys!”, provides one of the episode’s most memorable moments.

The episode also advances Lord Ormund’s strategy, with Ulf the White persuaded to abandon Rhaenyra’s side. The betrayal could significantly alter the balance of dragon power heading into the finale.

The Harrenhal storyline involving Aemond and Alys, as well as the continuing Rhaenyra, Alicent and Mysaria arcs feel less positive. Nevertheless, the episode is well-written, action-packed and filled with betrayal and tense stand-offs.

With only one episode remaining, “The Dragon in Winter” leaves House of the Dragon Season 3 heading towards a potentially decisive finale.

The season finale is scheduled for next week on Sunday, August 9, 2026 on HBO.
