Google may unveil a surprise new device at its Made by Google event on August 12. Along with the Pixel 11 lineup and the Pixel Watch 5, the company is expected to introduce a new item tracker called the Google Pixel Tag.
According to leaked product listings and images, the Pixel Tag will be available in a color called Fog Light and will carry the model number GA12506. A leaked listing from a European retailer suggests it could be priced at 30 euros (about $34), indicating that Google plans to make it an affordable product.
Most early rumors focused on the hardware, but Google’s Gemini AI assistant accidentally revealed several details about the device before its official launch.
People testing Gemini discovered that the AI provided step-by-step instructions on how to use the Pixel Tag. It said users will set up and manage the tracker through Android’s new Find Hub app.
The AI response also said the Pixel Tag will include a built-in speaker and support Fast Pair, allowing it to connect quickly and easily with Pixel smartphones.
Gemini further revealed that the tracker will feature Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, allowing users to locate it more accurately on a map through UWB and Google’s crowdsourced Find Hub network.
Unlike standard Bluetooth tracking, which estimates distance based on signal strength, UWB measures the time radio waves take to travel between devices. This time-of-flight technology provides much more precise location tracking and can guide users to within a few inches of a lost item, similar to premium trackers offered by Apple and Samsung.
The Pixel Tag will also rely on Google’s Find Hub network, which includes more than 1 billion active Android devices worldwide. When someone with an Android device passes near a lost Pixel Tag, the phone can anonymously detect its Bluetooth signal and securely send its location to Google’s servers.
The system is designed to protect user privacy by ensuring that the person whose phone detects the tracker is not notified or identified. Google said the network is intended to help users find lost items quickly and securely.
