Food industry waging digital fight against deforestation: Report

One of the major obstacles in food industry growth in today’s era is “Deforestation”.

The global food ingredients sector is undergoing a massive digital overhaul to purge deforestation from its supply chains.

Deforestation is a brutally physical affair. Whether uprooted by earthmovers, severed by chainsaws or burned to a crisp by targeted fires, a tree’s destruction is violent and final.

Driven by strict new legislation—most notably the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which mandates strict compliance by December 30, 2026—food giants and ingredient suppliers are swapping out paper-based tracking for an advanced, space-age digital toolkit.

Many everyday food products depend on crops grown in regions where forests have historically been cleared for agriculture including Cocoa, Coffee, Palm oil, Soy, Cattle products, Nuts and spices etc.

When forests are cleared to create farmland, it can contribute to biodiversity loss, higher carbon emissions, and climate change.

As a result, governments, consumers, and investors are demanding more transparency about where food ingredients come from.

The digital fight against deforestation has transformed sustainability from a voluntary “marketing checkbox” into a hard legal requirement for market entry.

By building transparent, interoperable digital frameworks, the food industry is proving that even the most complex global ingredients can be comprehensively monitored from space to shelf.

For quoting an example, one of the world’s largest suppliers of cocoa, coffee, nuts, and spices, Olam Food Ingredients (ofi) faces a massive challenge monitoring a supply chain that spans over a million smallholder farmers across ecologically sensitive regions.

To prove an ingredient didn’t come from deforested land, companies must know the exact coordinates of where it was grown.

Such Platforms utilize tokenization to create a “digital twin” of a raw ingredient (like a batch of cocoa beans or palm oil) at the farm gate.

This digital certificate attaches the geographic boundary data to the ingredient, ensuring it remains verifiable even when mixed with other batches during shipping and processing.

The system works as advanced AI algorithms continuously scan satellite imagery to cross-reference farm boundaries against tree canopy changes.

If a supplier’s mapped boundary overlaps with a pocket of fresh tree loss or forest degradation, the system triggers an automated compliance alert and freezes the supplier’s capability to sell into the network

Before an ingredient enters critical markets, cloud systems automatically aggregate the farm’s legal documentation, geolocation history, and satellite hazard scores to generate an automated Due Diligence Statement (DDS). 

This algorithmic paperwork ensures compliance without stalling global shipping lanes.

Satellite monitoring: Satellites track changes in forest cover and help identify whether farmland expansion is occurring in forested areas.

Supply-chain mapping: Companies map farms, suppliers, and production locations to understand where ingredients originate.

GPS and farm-level data: Digital records help connect products to specific farms or regions.

Artificial intelligence and data analytics: AI can analyze large amounts of environmental and supply-chain data to detect risks faster.

Blockchain and traceability systems: Some companies use digital records to improve transparency from farm to consumer.
