England Gymnast injured in Commonwealth Games final

LONDON: A terrifying fall by England gymnast Gabriel Langton brought the Commonwealth Games men’s team final to a standstill on Friday, as the 19-year-old was rushed to hospital for medical assessment.

The incident occurred during the final rotation of the competition when Langton fell from the horizontal bar, landing headfirst on the floor. Medical personnel immediately rushed to his aid, and the event was temporarily halted as he received treatment on the competition floor.

After several minutes of medical attention, Langton was placed on a stretcher with head and neck support before being transported to hospital for further assessment.

In a statement, Team England confirmed that Langton was conscious, moving and speaking with doctors following the incident.

“We are grateful to the medical teams who responded immediately to provide assistance,” the team said. “He has been taken to hospital, and we will share more information when it becomes available.”

The incident overshadowed the remainder of the competition, which resumed after the delay. England went on to win the silver medal, finishing behind Canada, while Australia claimed bronze its first men’s team gymnastics medal since winning gold at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

Langton had been drafted into England’s squad as a replacement for injured six-time Olympic medallist Max Whitlock, leaving him unable to celebrate the team’s podium finish.

Teammate Luke Whitehouse said the team had received encouraging news about Langton’s condition.

“From what we’ve heard, he’s doing OK. Gymnastics is such a dangerous sport, and things like this remind us of that. It’s one of those things you have to put out of your mind,” Whitehouse said.

Team England is expected to provide further updates on Langton’s condition after doctors complete their medical assessment.
