Chinese food in Karachi finds a new identity across generations

Chinese food has become one of Karachi’s most loved cuisines, but the dishes many people enjoy today tell a story of adaptation, culture and changing tastes.

For decades, restaurants across the city have served familiar favorites such as hot and sour soup, fried rice, chow mein and chicken manchurian. These dishes have become part of family dinners, celebrations and everyday food memories.

The journey of Chinese food in Karachi began when early Chinese restaurants adjusted their recipes to match local preferences.

Instead of following traditional Chinese cooking styles completely, chefs added stronger flavors, extra spices and richer sauces to appeal to Pakistani customers.

Amjad Akber, a restaurant manager on Tariq Road, said customers wanted food with more spice and stronger taste. Over time, this created a unique Pakistani-Chinese style that became popular among generations of Karachi residents.

Many families still visit old Chinese restaurants because of the memories attached to them. For regular customers, the familiar flavors, old style interiors and traditional dishes represent childhood moments and family gatherings.

However, Karachi’s Chinese food scene is also changing. A new generation of diners is becoming interested in authentic Chinese cuisines from different regions, including Sichuan, Cantonese and northern Chinese dishes.

Modern Chinese restaurants in the city are introducing dishes such as Mapo Tofu, Sichuan noodles, dumplings and hot pot while keeping the original flavors and cooking methods closer to their roots.

Chef Huang, a Chinese cuisine expert in Karachi, said many people are now curious about the difference between Pakistani-Chinese food and traditional Chinese cuisine.

He explained that Chinese food is not a single style but a collection of many regional cuisines, each with its own ingredients, techniques and flavors. However, he believes these changes reflect how food naturally adapts to different cultures.

Today, Chinese food in Karachi represents two experiences at the same time.  The story of Chinese food in Karachi is not only about recipes, it is about how a foreign cuisine became part of the city’s identity and continues to evolve with changing tastes.
