Charlie Kirk killing: prosecutors reveal evidence they say shows political motive

Prosecutors in the killing of Charlie Kirk say an inscription engraved on a bullet supports their argument that the conservative activist was targeted because of his politics.

According to CNN, in a court filing on Tuesday, prosecutors described the inscription “Hey Facist! CATCH!” as an “overt political reference” allegedly demonstrating defendant Tyler Robinson’s motivation.

Establishing a political motive could be important as prosecutors seek the death penalty if Robinson is convicted.

Robinson, 23, is charged with aggravated murder and other offences over Kirk’s fatal shooting during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10, and has not entered a plea.

Prosecutors also cited a text message Robinson allegedly wrote about Kirk: “I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can’t be negotiated out.”

His lawyers have argued the message does not provide sufficient evidence of a political motive.

Prosecutors also allege Robinson left a handwritten note stating: “I had the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I took it.”

Investigators previously presented DNA evidence they say linked Robinson to the suspected murder weapon and a tool allegedly used to engrave bullet cartridges. His lawyers have questioned the reliability of the evidence.

Prosecutors also argue the shooting endangered people attending the event. The defence says the shooter “hit the intended target.”

Judge Tony Graf is expected to consider further arguments on September 1 before deciding whether the case should proceed to trial.
