CDF Munir arrived in Peshawar a day earlier to attend a meeting of the Federal Apex Committee on the National Action Plan, chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday. The meeting discussed the security situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), with the government reiterating its commitment to restoring peace and accelerating development in the province
PM Shehbaz defended the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), saying the measures had been necessitated by the deteriorating security situation, and vowed to restore peace, prosperity and development in the province.
Defending the decision, he maintained that the Constitution and law empowered the government to take the measures implemented in K-P. He thanked the coalition partners for supporting the move, particularly President Zardari and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif.
The meeting came amid a resurgence of terrorism in K-P. Security assessments presented to the federal cabinet showed that terrorist incidents in the province had increased by 195 per cent between March 2024 and September 2026, with police and security personnel bearing the brunt of attacks.
On Thursday, four police personnel, including a Counter-Terrorism Department deputy superintendent of police, were martyred in an exchange of fire with armed men in Karak. In a separate incident in Bannu, two civilians were injured in a remote-controlled bomb explosion.
