Ottawa City Council is considering renaming a street named after US President Donald Trump, with “Taco Avenue” and “Obama Avenue” among the suggested replacements.
Councillors unanimously voted on Wednesday to take the first step towards changing the name of Trump Avenue, a residential street in Ottawa’s Central Park neighbourhood that has carried the name for about 25 years.
The move comes amid escalating Canada-US trade tensions and Trump’s repeated criticism of Canada.
Trump also signed an executive order on Thursday directing the US government to refer to Lake Ontario as “Lake America”.
Ottawa councillor Tim Tierney told CNN that proposed replacements include Ontario Avenue, Canada Avenue, Beaver Avenue, Gulf of Mexico Avenue, Canada Goose Avenue and Pelosi Avenue.
“Taco Avenue” refers to the acronym “Trump Always Chickens Out”.
Any change would require support from more than half of the street’s residents, followed by public consultation on a replacement name.
The process is not expected to move forward until after Ottawa’s October municipal election.
A previous attempt failed in 2021 after residents split evenly, with 21 supporting a change and 21 opposing it.
“The semantics of names, we can save that for another day in the future,” Tierney told CNN, adding that trade and tariffs should remain the priority.
