Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to make a case on resetting UK-EU ties by considering a new deal with the bloc.

Burnham will address Parliament after an end of recess on Monday and urge parliamentarians to consider a new and closer relationship with the European Union which is only possible with a new post-Brexit deal aimed at boosting growth and controlling immigration.

Burnham’s approach goes against his predecessor Keir Starmer who avoided reopening the debate over joining the EU. However, Burnham argues that Britain hasn’t benefited from Brexit and should re-examine its relationship with Europe with a calm, clear-eyed approach.

“Andy understands why some politicians don’t want to face up to the reality that Brexit has not delivered what they once promised. But it is time for a different conversation about what our long-term relationship should be,” a source in Burnham’s Downing Street office said.

“Sticking ‌with the status quo and not working relentlessly to secure a good deal that boosts growth would be a major dereliction of duty.”

As per the source, Burnham will ask all parties to advocate for a new deal, taking as a new opportunity for the country’s closer ties with the EU.

Even last month, the PM vouched for the UK joining the EU in a major shift of ties but such suggestion drew criticism from the bloc’s leaders.

In 2016, Burnham also campaigned for Britain not to exit the EU in a referendum on membership. Public support in Britain for rejoining the EU has improved in recent years, with a majority now in favour.

However, that support declines when voters consider contributing to the EU budget or adopting the euro.
