Bad Bunny has won Emmy for his Super Bowl Halftime Show, bringing him closer to potential EGOT status
Bad Bunny has won an Emmy Award for his Super Bowl Halftime Show performance, adding a major television honour to his growing list of career achievements.
The Puerto Rican rapper, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, received the award for outstanding variety special (live) during Night 1 of this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, formerly known as the Creative Arts Emmys.
His Super Bowl Halftime Show, which took place on February 8, also won six other awards: directing, lighting design, music direction, sound mixing, choreography and technical direction.
The performance featured appearances from Lady Gaga and Ricky Martin, while an actual wedding and real-life business owners were also included among the crowd.
The show’s creative director, Harriet Cuddeford, previously explained the thinking behind the production.
“The performance is celebrating normal people, and what it is to be human and love and have joy, and really appreciate one another,” Cuddeford told Variety.
“This was to show how much he values his community, to celebrate normal people on the world’s biggest stage, especially people who are of importance in Latino culture. He’s a very authentic person, Benito, and it’s about just being authentic and very real and very human.”
Bad Bunny’s Emmy win means he now has one of the four major entertainment awards associated with EGOT status: an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony.
The 32-year-old could potentially add the remaining honours in future, although the source notes that a Tony Award and Oscar-winning song would be needed to complete an EGOT.
The Emmy comes after another career milestone for Bad Bunny. His Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour has helped him extend his record on Billboard’s monthly Top Tours chart.
