Andrew Garfield reveals he stopped using ChatGPT after playing Sam Altman in upcoming film
‘Artificial’, directed by Luca Guadagnino, stars Garfield as the OpenAI CEO and is scheduled to premiere in October
Andrew Garfield has revealed that playing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in the upcoming film Artificial prompted him to stop using ChatGPT.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Garfield explained that the role reminded him of his experience playing Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin in The Social Network, which led him to leave Facebook.
“It’s the same thing that happened to me when I did The Social Network, which was, I got off Facebook immediately,” he told Kimmel. “Yeah, I got off my ChatGPT immediately.”
Garfield said his experiences portraying figures connected to major technology companies had influenced the way he personally approached technology.
“The more you know, the more you realise we’re careening into some very unknown territory,” he said.
The actor also discussed wider concerns surrounding the rapid development of artificial intelligence and its potential effects on employment and society.
“What I suppose is good and transparent is they’re like, ‘Yeah, no, we kind of don’t know who’s going to lose their jobs and how we’re going to create an economy that works for ordinary people but we’re going to find out and I promise you it’s going to be awesome,’” he said.
Garfield’s comments come as AI continues to generate debate over its influence on jobs, technology and everyday life.
Artificial, directed by Luca Guadagnino, stars Garfield as Sam Altman and is scheduled to premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival in October.
