“I waited on Oprah Winfrey. I bet she doesn’t remember it. But I do,” Poehler recalled
Amy Poehler has revealed that she once waited on Oprah Winfrey while working as a restaurant server in Chicago, long before becoming a household name through Saturday Night Live and Parks and Recreation.
The comedian shared the memorable encounter during a recent interview with The Wall Street Journal, reflecting on her early working days before her entertainment career took off.
“I waited on Oprah Winfrey. I bet she doesn’t remember it. But I do,” Poehler recalled.
The actress explained that she worked as a server after graduating from Boston College while pursuing her interest in comedy and improvisation. Looking back, she said the experience helped her develop skills that later became useful in her entertainment career.
According to Poehler, waiting tables required the ability to think quickly, remain confident and respond to unexpected situations, much like performing improv comedy.
“Yeah, when you’re a waitress, you learn a lot about improvising,” she explained. She also joked about having to confidently answer customers’ questions, even when she did not necessarily know the details, such as explaining what ingredients went into a particular sauce.
Poehler also revealed that her years in the restaurant industry left her with a practical skill she still takes pride in. “I don’t mean to brag, but I can carry four plates on one arm,” she said.
Although Winfrey may not remember their brief interaction, Poehler clearly has not forgotten it. The comedian even joked that she might bring up the encounter the next time they have dinner together.
“I should bring it up to her. When I get home and we have dinner, I’ll let her know,” Poehler said.
Poehler eventually found success in comedy, making her Saturday Night Live debut in 2001. She became one of the show’s most recognisable cast members before going on to star as Leslie Knope in the NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation.
Her career has since expanded to include acting, writing, producing and directing, while her podcast, Good Hang with Amy Poehler, has featured conversations with several prominent entertainment figures.
Despite her success, the comedian’s latest recollection offers a reminder of her early years working in restaurants while trying to establish herself in the entertainment industry.
