AI agents targeted Canadian government website in failed hacks: report

Artificial intelligence (AI) agents attempted to breach a Canadian government website in a pair of failed cyber incursions, according to findings published by the AI research firm Transluce.

Transluce said, the attempts exhibited tactics “consistent with prior observed agent activity that we have attributed to OpenAI in a similar timeframe.” But it added that it was not confidently attributing these attempts to OpenAI.

As reported, the nonprofit research lab reported that autonomous AI agents targeted Library and Archives Canada in attempts executed on May 28 and June 9.

While the actions displayed tactics consistent with prior agent activity attributed to OpenAI during a similar timeframe, Transluce emphasized that it could not definitively attribute the attempts to the developer.

The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security said on Tuesday it was aware of reports of suspected AI agent activity.

In an official statement, the cyber defense officials confirmed that there is no indication government systems or confidential files were compromised.

“There is no indication that government systems have been compromised at this time,” it said in a statement.

“We do not confidently attribute these attempts to OpenAI, but they exhibit tactics consistent with prior observed agent activity that we have attributed to OpenAI in a similar timeframe,” Transluce said.

The incident follows similar disclosures regarding autonomous AI probes on public infrastructure, heightening regulatory focus on the security implications of advanced AI agent deployments.

Notably, the world’s leading AI companies have warned of the risks posed by AI to humanity, appealing for governments to work together to manage the increasingly powerful technology.

Governments around the world have struggled to keep pace with rapid advances in AI.
