Indonesia suspended operations at eight airports on Sunday after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted, sending an ash cloud across the region and disrupting hundreds of flights.
Ash was detected around Soekarno-Hatta International Airport near Jakarta, forcing authorities to halt operations until at least 9:30 PM local time.
More than 22,000 passengers and 209 flights were affected, according to Indonesia’s transport ministry.
Saturday’s eruption produced lava and booming sounds reportedly heard up to 700 kilometres away, according to Indonesia’s geology agency.
Two more eruptions were recorded on Sunday.
Volcanic ash reached up to 6,000 metres on the Java side of the volcano and 15,000 metres on the Sumatra side, meteorological agency BMKG said.
Singapore Airlines cancelled Jakarta flights for the remainder of Sunday, while Qantas reported cancellations and other disruptions.
“Safety remains our highest priority. We have contacted affected customers and are providing assistance. Services will resume when conditions allow,” Qantas said in a statement.
At least 16 domestic flights to Bali were also cancelled.
Authorities are considering cloud-seeding to encourage rain and clear ash.
Ships have also been ordered to remain at least two miles from Anak Krakatau, which lies between Java and Sumatra.
