KANGERLUSSUAQ: Denmark has deployed military conscripts to Greenland for the first time in recent history, drawing fresh attention across the Arctic as Copenhagen boosts its defense presence amid repeated U.S. calls to acquire the strategically vital territory.
The deployment comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly pushed for the United States to acquire Greenland, citing national security concerns and accusing Denmark of failing to properly defend the Arctic region. Denmark and Greenland have firmly rejected the proposal.
The conscripts are part of the first group recruited under Denmark’s expanded military service program. The new program is designed to train soldiers to operate in some of the kingdom’s most remote and difficult environments.

Copenhagen has pledged billions of dollars to strengthen its Arctic defenses after Denmark’s defense minister acknowledged that the region had suffered from years of underinvestment.
Capt. Laura Jepsen, a company commander, said the deployment was part of a broader strategic effort surrounding Greenland. She said the immediate focus was to train soldiers and give them greater experience operating in Arctic terrain and extreme weather.
The conscripts are participating in Arctic Endurance, a Danish military exercise focused on combat skills and survival in severe cold-weather conditions.
The exercise is part of Arctic Sentry, a NATO mission launched this year to increase the alliance’s presence in the Arctic and help reduce tensions within NATO following Trump’s remarks about Greenland.
The growing military activity has also drawn criticism from Russia, which has the largest military presence in the Arctic. China has also expanded its activities in the resource-rich Arctic, mainly through cooperation with Russia.
