Iran pushes for new rules on Strait of Hormuz ship movements

Iran has pushed for new rules aimed at Tehran’s tighter control over the movement of ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a senior Iranian source privy to the matter and reported by Reuters, Iran wants control over “inbound shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and visibility over outbound traffic, with the ability to intervene if necessary.”

This proposal is the part of a temporary plan which is being discussed with Oman to reopen the strategically important waterway responsible for shipping 20 percent of global oil and energy supplies.

As per the source, this is not confirmed yet as this “is a general idea currently being discussed.” Under this plan, the outbound lane would require a route between Oman and Iran. The ships would get exit clearance from Oman but after notifying Tehran.

“Tehran ​is unlikely to change its position,” the source added, saying that the country has ⁠already shown flexibility by departing from its stance of seeking full control over ​traffic in both directions in the strait.

On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmail Baghaei, also confirmed that the new shipping maritime route in the Hormuz will be more separate from existing corridors.

“We are now going to reach an understanding on a route acceptable to both sides – neither the northern route nor the southern route – but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security,” Baghaei said.

Baghaei also added that an understanding between Iran and Oman on a new route has nothing to do with whether the Strait of Hormuz is reopened or remains closed.

Earlier, Oman proposed a joint regional mechanism of Hormuz with a 50-50 split between Muscat and Tehran. However, Iran rejected this proposal.

Earlier on Sunday, President Trump announced plans to halt attacks on Iran to initiate the talks with the other party on Monday, provided a rapid deal is reached that includes the total opening of the strait and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.

However, Iranian officials denied any kind of such talks with the United States.
