US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced today that the United States is all set to play a positive role in helping halt the war in Ukraine after talks with Russian Minister Sergei Lavrov on the margins of an ASEAN gathering in Manila.
This comes after the meeting where Rubio stated President Trump had clarified that the United States was willing to lend a hand to resolve a futile and needless conflict if the opportunity arose.
He further said Washington had passed on information to Moscow while refusing to detail Russia’s position during the key talks.
In light of the current situation, Rubio said: “We had a good conversation. He said he would not go into specifics about what was discussed.”
“The United States, the president’s been clear that … we are prepared to play a constructive role in bringing about an end to a senseless war, and we’re ready to do that,” Rubio said.
According to Rubio, the conflict had inflicted a heavy cost, referencing civilian deaths and Russian strikes on Kyiv. Notably, both Russia and Ukraine had a compelling motive to bring to an end but the pivotal challenge is finding a settlement.
“I think it is a very bloody war. I think both should have an incentive to end. That’s been the challenge is an end that both sides can accept, and we have tried and we all continue to try to see if we can find a middle ground that brings this about,Rubio continued.”
