According to experts, to take steam safely, boil water in a wide pot and place it on a stable surface to avoid spills. Sit at a safe distance from the pot and cover your head with a towel or cloth to trap the steam. Keep your eyes closed and breathe slowly through both the nose and mouth. Five to ten minutes of steam is usually enough, as taking it for too long may cause dryness of the skin and airways.
Plain water steam is effective on its own, but some people add mint leaves, cloves, or eucalyptus oil.
